
Becoming A Registered Nurse
Satisfactory completion of the Lutheran School of Nursing
Diploma Program is contingent upon a student being physically,
mentally and medically able – with or without reasonable
accommodation – to successfully perform the Essential
Functions of the Student Nurse.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE STUDENT NURSE
Following appropriate instruction and supervision, the student will:
- Use their senses to observe and assess clients’ needs and condition.
- Participate in the planning and evaluation of a client’s nursing care,
including reading all written medical information pertaining to
the client and analyzing measurements and functions of technical
equipment pertaining to client care.
- Implement nursing measures to give safe and effective care to
clients, including:
a. Administering physical care that often requires moving/lifting
both adult and child clients as well as equipment.
b. Performing nursing procedures that may require standing for
extended periods and ability to stoop or bend.
- Communicate effectively with clients, families and other members of
the health care team including both written and verbal communication.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for clients.
- Attend class sessions that may involve sitting for extended periods
with short breaks periodically.
- Be capable of administering emergency care including
performing CPR.
- Pass written scheduled examinations related to course/
clinical curriculum.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS*
- Completed Admission Application form.
- Submit Application Fee.
- Typed one to two page essay in 12 point font using standard English
indicating why you are interested in attending Lutheran School of
Nursing and becoming a registered nurse.
- Official high school transcripts or GED transcript sent directly
from the school attended to Lutheran School of Nursing.
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
must be sent directly from those schools to Lutheran School
of Nursing.
- ACT score of 20 or comparable SAT score or 2.5 cumulative
college grade point average with a minimum of 20 college level
hours completed.
- Score of 10 or better on Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) Level
A administered at Lutheran School of Nursing at no cost (waived for
minimum ACT score of 20 or bachelor’s degree).
- Three Estimate of Suitability Forms completed by someone other
than a direct family member who has known the applicant for a
minimum of six months.
- Estimate of Suitability Form completed by previous nursing program
administrator(s) from any nursing program(s) previously attended.
Applicants whose native language is not English must document their English language proficiency at the time of application. Applicants may satisfy this requirement by submitting current and official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores, score must be no more than two years old. Lutheran School of Nursing's TOEFL requirement for applicants is:
- 210 on the computer-based test
- 550 on the paper-based test
- 78 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT)
This requirement is subject to change.
Nonnative speakers who hold degrees or diplomas from postsecondary institutions in English-speaking countries (e.g., the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand) may be exempt from the TOEFL.
PRE-REQUISITES
Before a student can be officially admitted to Lutheran School of Nursing,
he or she MUST complete and receive a grade of “C” or better in three
college-level classes:
- English Composition I
- Introduction to Sociology
- Introduction to Psychology
- Anatomy and Physiology I
These prerequisite courses can be completed one of three ways:
- Lutheran School of Nursing offers these classes each spring and fall
semester on our campus. Applications are accepted for both Spring
and Fall enrollment.
- Transfer from any accredited college or university – LSN
accepts transfer credits for these courses from any accredited college
or university.
- CLEP or AP credit – LSN accepts College Level Examination for
Proficiency (CLEP) or Advanced Placement (AP) scores for these three prerequisites courses if a student achieves the passing score
recommended by the American Council on Education.
